Big Cities, Big Bucks: Biggest Employers in America's Top Ten Cities

9. Atlanta

Poster child for the southern boom, Atlanta, the third fastest growing city, has grown from Southern belle to belle of the ball, doubling its population in the last 20 years and becoming a growing international business center that¹s expected to grow another 20% by 2012.

Once the center of the malaria zone, Atlanta is home to the nearby federal government¹s world-famous Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Established in 1946, the CDC grew from 7 doctors to 15,000 healthcare workers in 170 occupations. About 10% have medical degrees. Now considered a leading authority on global health, its Bio-Safety Level 4 labs are among only a few in the U.S. and it is one of only two places in the world to house the historic smallpox vaccine.

Atlanta is also home to renowned Children¹s Hospital of Atlanta, recently voted one of the Best Companies to Work at in America, as well as the Grady, a well-known, public hospital which serves a large low-income population, funded largely by government programs. Most Grady docs come from nearly Emory University and Morehouse College.
