4. Radiologic Technologists and Technicians

Radiologic technologists and technicians take x-rays and administer nonradioactive materials into patients’ bloodstreams for diagnostic purposes. They prepare patients for x-rays as well as keep patient records and manage radiology equipment.

An Associates degree in radiologic technology is required for this career. Advanced degrees are necessary for some supervisory positions. There are more than 600 accredited radiography programs, making this an appealing and relatively easy field to enter. A license is not required, but the federal government has set voluntary standards to ensure the safety of patients and technologists.


Employment is projected to be excellent over the next ten years. As the population grows and ages, there will be an increased demand for radiologic imaging. As cost decreases, the use of diagnostic treatments will become more widespread, increasing the need for radiologic technologists.
