4 Factors That Can Ruin Your Job Search
Peter Vogt, MonsterTRAK Career Coach
It’s dangerous to make blanket generalizations about different jobs, careers and industries. You’ve probably heard many pronouncements like these from friends, family members and others:
• “You should major in computer science. It’s the hottest field, and you’ll get a good job when you graduate.”
• “You’re going to major in art? You’re nuts! You’ll never find a job!”
• “Why don’t you try accounting? There are tons of jobs in that field.”
• “An English major, huh? I hope you enjoy the unemployment line.”
Sound familiar? There’s no way to say with certainty that you’ll get an instant job if you go into nursing or that you’ll never find a job if you major in music or sociology. Why? Because there are simply too many variables affecting your eventual job search in any field, and you need to take those variables into account, both when you’re deciding on a career path and when you’re actually taking the first step toward your first job after graduation.
Here are a few key factors affecting job search success:

It is a great article. Even with nursing, geography plays a major role. Some States/Cities have a lot more job openings in nursing than others.

I worked as an RN for about 18 years and I loved it. In 1995 I got a possession charge and my license was suspended. Now I would have to retake my boards in order to practice. I would then probably have to go through the board to be approved but would probably be able to practice. I just had major back surgery so maybe that isn't my best option. In 2001 I went to school for Medical Secretary but have been unsuccessful in finding a job. I would like to go into Billing and Coding and I am searching for a way to get the education. Maybe I should just take any job to get on my feet then progress into what I want. Anyway I liked the article and some of the comments.

This is such a great article as it helps people who are in the decision making mode like myself who are struggling as to what to do with their career struggles as to what they want to do. I have a strong retail background, a strong medical background as well, but suffered a brain hemorrage two years ago, and now can no longer remember the better part of billing as I used to do it. The system has changed so much that I can no longer do it. I know that if i go back to school and relearn it (read have it beaten into my head, I could catch on) but I am not sure that is what I want to do, so I am considering a career change into secretarial waters as I am a great typist, and also know alot about many types of machines, such as faxes, copiers, etc. My options are open, and as long as I do not have a job, I will keep trying to learn. Hats off to all in the decision making boat!!! Good luck in your job hunt!
