A good, formal, straightforward way to address your cover letter is "Dear Hiring Manager."

    Cover letters are largely ignored.
First use keywords in the body of your resume that match the job opportunity.
Recruiters use searches before any resumes are seen by human eyes.

Yes I am also wondering what to write if you don't know the person's name. A lot of jobs I have applied to through monster don't have any details about real people you will be contacting, just a generic email address to send applications to. Do you just leave off the greeting altogether?? "To whom it may concern" seems worse than "dear sir"!!
