And the Band Played On was adopted from the best-selling book of the same name written by Randy Shilts. And the Band Played On focuses on the growing AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Dr. Don Francis (Modine) begins to study the increasing number of gay men dying from an unknown disease in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Francis spearheads an investigation and finds that many do not support him.
