Mental Health Counselor
Mental health counselors encompass a variety of professions, from marriage and family therapists to substance abuse counselors. Salaries are dependent upon job responsibilities, location, and facility, a master’s degree is always the minimum requirement to get licensed and practice. Those with associate or bachelor’s degree can often be trained to volunteer.
Mental health counselors require an advanced degree, such as a Master of Substance Abuse Counseling, Master of Family Therapy or Doctorate in Psychology. Individuals interested in this job should have a background in counseling and psychology, as well as clinical experience. In order to practice, mental health counselors must be licensed in their state of practice, which involves a master’s degree and roughly 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience.
Employment is expected to grow by 23% by 2016. The number of people who need counseling is expected to grow as well, meaning more counselors will be needed in places like rehabilitation centers and hospitals. Opportunities will be best in rural and urban areas.
