The growing popularity of physician assistant careers is fueled by the increased need for physician-extender positions in places like retail clinics and mobile health services. Physician assistants must all graduate from a two-year career-targeted PA program in order to get licensed. Physician assistants may choose to pursue an advanced degree on their way to becoming a physician or internist. Because of the shortage in primary care doctors, physician assistants are becoming increasingly important.

Full-time programs typically last two years. In 2007, there were 136 accredited physician assistant programs. Minimum admission requirements usually consist of at least two years of college and some work experience in the healthcare industry. Many PAs have prior experience as nurses, medical assistants, or military medics. Specialization is possible in areas such as surgery, neonatology or emergency medicine. Post-graduate educational programs are also available for certified PAs who are graduates of accredited programs.
