Professional licensure issues

Posted about 1 year ago One factor you have to consider in going into a licensed healthcare field is that professional state licensing boards have a lot of power and often licensees do not get due process. I'm a dentist and I was severely "disciplined" by the Maine licensing baord because they wanted to cover up for the actions of a board member who had left me without an office after reneging on an agreement to turn over her office to me when she later backed out of a partnership. There are numerous other practitioners who have been treated very badly, some because disgruntled former employees brought outrageous claims against the dentist to the board and with no substantiation of such claims. This is going on in other healthcare fields also, and probably in all states. With the high cost and lengthy education involved, particularly for physicians and dentists, it's something that people need to be aware of. I was never forewarned and had to lose my business, home and community, not to mention years of income and my reputation. And moving to other states is often very, very difficult, resulting in having to take more board licensing exams. This is especially hard if you've been out of school for awhile. |
