I think healthcare workers should set the example for their patients and not smoke or take the steps necessary to quit.

Why should it matter? As long as they aren't smoking around me to telling me I need to quit.

There are a lot of things that healthcare workers shouldn't do. Why do we always concentrate on them smoking. Certain other behaviors can be far more damaging than whether they smoke or not. If they aren't blowing smoke in the patients faces, then it's not a big deal. I agree that yes, they should certainly set a good example but is that not any different than the overweight doctor/nurse etc. taking my blood pressure at the office and then telling me what I need to do to avoid high blood pressure. And don't even get me started on how many people in the healthcare field that do some more sinister things involving sex and drugs and such. Anyway now you got me started.

More power to them. As a smoker I don't offend anyone and I don't smoke where I shouldn"t. I have the right (for now) to smoke and I believe anyone no matter the type of work tthey are in have the right also. I think one thing that if it were possible to ban would be people in a public restaurant while eating BLOW THERE NOSE AND COUGH UP SPUTUM...now that is gross and very bad manners. Smoke away.

OMG! The comment about blowing noses and coughing up crap while I'm trying to eat my dinner is great. That is one of my biggest complaints. The person who is complaining about my smoke and sitting there doing that, plus letting their 5 year old touch everything on the buffet and run around all over the place, then the little infant is screaming so loud I can't hear my own conversation. Anyway, as a smoker I also only smoke where I'm allowed, but at what point does this infringe on my rights. Another topic all together.

The thing is everyone keeps bringing stuff up about health care workers who smoke and yada yada. I think people tend to forget we are human.  But there are some things as health care workers, especially those in the public eye, should pay attention to, like weight and other things that are illegal and unhealthy.

Let me give you an example

When I was in the Army I hurt my back during a training exercise, and had been in for about 8 or 9 years at that time, so I get sent to the local hospital where I was stationed. It was the military hospital there on base, and the doctor who saw me weighed about 300lbs. As if that were not enough he implied that I was faking.  And of course this upset me because I was being told by a fat doctor that I did not want to work, and this from a man who looked like he wouldnt know a hard days work if it slapped him in the face.

Of course there is the the idea that most medical people in the military are taught that most people are faking, but I did not walk in, I was carried in by my commander and sergeant.

Ok a little bit of a tangent there, but I think I made my point

I think that in principle, it's everyones own business if they chose to die from lung cancer or not.

However, I have seen at least one patient a day twist their nose and comment that their nurse smells like ash.  So the fact is that if you smoke in your scrubs you affect your patients more than you think.

This really is not a good thing if your patient's have asthma?

Most people can not stand the smell of smoke while they are sick as well.

If I am in a situation where I am working with patients, I either do not smoke during my shift, or I won't smoke in my scrubs. I always have a bottle of febreeze and mouthwash with me as well, I know I can't stand the smell and I am a smoker.

But I also know that not everyone thinks the same as I do.

I'm glad I'm not in scrubs any more. But I go out behind the building, take off the lab coat, smoke, run back in, comb the hair, spritz & spray.... It would be so much healthier, easier, and cheaper to just quit!
