Respiratory Therapists Help Ease Chronic Conditions
Cindy Mehallow, Monster Contributing Writer
For millions of people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), other smoking-related illnesses and some sleep disorders, the simple act of breathing can become a life-or-death struggle. Respiratory therapists (RTs) help provide immediate care, ongoing rehabilitation and patient education so patients can live as normally as possible.

I have been a Certified Respiratory Therapist for 2 years, and I would definitely recommend job shadowing this career at various hospitals before entering a Respiratory Care program. This is a type of career that requires a certain balance of compassion and coldness. In a hospital setting, you take part in alot of cardiopulmonary emergencies, and CPR doesn't always save the life. We see alot of patient deaths. I have also known alot of students in the program who couldn't stomach some of the duties of the job. It's important to know what you're getting into, BEFORE you have put alot of time, money, and effort into it.
